At least thirteen people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
